M&M #4

Deuteronomy 11:18

Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.

Psalms 1: 2-3

But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.

He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.

just a tip for helping us to memorize these verses. personally, memorizing things (including verses) is a very difficult thing to do, a better way of doing this would be first to think through and reflect about what the verses are talking about, and see what God has to say to you in those verses. Then, after understanding and personalizing these verses, it would be much easier to do remember the verse :)

some things that maybe you can ponder about when you do M&M on the above 2 verses.

1) What does it mean to "tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads"? How can we apply it to ourselves?

2) PSA1:2-3 talks about delight in the law of the LORD. Do we desire and look forward to spending time with God, or are we always too pre-occupied with other things and just rush through a time of personal QT? Are we claiming the promises in verse 3?

Do post any comments, thoughts or even reflection points you have. We can share them in the next QT meeting too =)

nobody posted any reflections about the m & m yet. So i m gg to start the ball rolling.

meditated on Psa 1:2-3 and as i was reflecting on these two verses, think i gained some insights and understanding too. so gonna share with you guys.

For verse 2, i got a glimpse of what the palmist meant when he said that his delight is in the law of the lord. I started meditating and reflecting a few verses everyday during my qt time and i got addicted to doing it. Meditation is no longer a chore or a responsibility that i had to fulfil or obey but it was a joy to me. The reason being, through the reflection of verses daily, God gave me deeper insights and wisdom to understand the verses and even apply to my life. I was truly amazed by the amount of juice there was just in a few lines of verses. It was truly rewarding to me and think i really drew closer to God during this period because of the wisdom and understanding that God gave me through the time of reflection.

It's like no wonder the palmist could meditate on the law day and night. Cause it was so fruitful!! He found so much joy that he couldn't stop and from there he gained much more.

In verse 3,God reminded me of a real tree. So i started observing trees as i took transport and even check out on fruit trees. If you realised, God offen used nature to teach us and I believed that God reminded me of fruit frees, so that i could understand the verse better.

"yields its fruits in season". Before a tree can even bear fruit it needs to go through an important tranining period which can last for 1-5 years depending on the conditions and the kind of fruit. This period is unavoidable and this period actually reflects our walk with God. After we receive Christ, the seed that has been planted starts to grow and take root. Feeding on the word of God and walking in God's way to equivalent to providing water and nutrients for the plant to grow. We are like the tree here and God and his word is like the water and nutrients that we need.

As we grow in God, allowing our mindsets to be renewed and changed by God's word, our life will gradually grow into a tree that bears fruit.

This is something i copied from a website "Fruit trees should be trained to have a single, upright trunk with well spaced, spreading side branches. The tree should be cone shaped so the upper branches don’t shade out the lower branches. The first five years are the most important for training a fruit tree."

You can see that the growth of a young tree into a fruit tree is not easy at all. Certain things have to take place first in order to grow good fruits.

I love this next sentence which i got from a website too "A few older branches can be removed each year to encourage lots of new growth." This reminds me of John 15 (the vine and the branches), whereby pruning occurs to prune us of the old branches = old thoughts and values, so that the tree can be more fruitful!! Aren't you amazed at how accurate God's word is? How in-line it is with the examples that God uses?

Personally, this verse is a verse i have seen many times and am personally quite familiar with it. However, the meditation of this verse brought forth deeper understanding into God's word and also help me to visualise the whole process of my life.

I am like a tree that is currently growing. If i want to bear good fruit and multiply this is what i will have to do - walk with God. And pruning is unavoidable too.

After bearing of fruits, reproduction occurs through dispersal of seeds and the fruits become useful things for birds, animals and man too. Bearing fruits will lead to a fruitful life. When we relate this to our life, it means that when our life has fruits, the seeds will take root in other people's life and this is how the gospel is being shared and spread and the great commission fulfiled.

Let's keep in step with God and His word. By being faithful and also obeying in action.

Tt's all ppl. Hope to hear from u all too.

Hey sis, thanks for your sharing on the growth of tree reflecting our life as a Christ follower.
I was thinking about the teaching which huili shared with some of us last year May during the exam period.

The 7 stages of seed growth.

Softening of the grain - Condition of our heart. Do we consistently absorb/receive from the Word of God?

Enlarging of the grain - Times of stretching. Do we face the challenges positively, or do we choose to complain and continue to stay at where we are?

Chemistry within the grain - Transformation in God - After constantly dwelling in God's presence, we stay to mobilise the potential/gifts that God has given us at the beginning, using them to serve Him and grow in our conviction.

Breaking the hard shell - We break out from those values/mindset which are not right in God's eyes.

Growing Roots - Roots starts to form, building a firm foundation.

Growing steady shoots - That's when the green leaves starts to appear slowly, as we progress gradually in our walk with God.

Bearing fruits - at this stage our character will grow and become visible to the people around us, being a blessing to our sphere of influence. And thru the fruits of the Spirit, many will be drawn towards God.

We need to see the goodness of having fruits in our lives, because without fruit, we will not have seeds to plant in the hearts of the people around us.

I really appreciate and enjoy the time reading the Word, be it over our weekly CG QT or during my own quiet time.

To me, it is important to CHOOSE to slow down and reflect about our life.
